I can’t tell you how excited I am that H&M has an eco-friendly brand, H&M Conscious. They use sustainable textiles to create the same cute styles at great prices as their main line, like this organic cotton palm print romper. Cotton has a reputation for being a “natural” choice, but conventionally grown cotton is actually known as the world’s dirtiest crop due to the heavy use of insecticides that’s needed to grow it, which is acutely poisonous to both wildlife and humans (Melody Meyer “Chemical Cotton” RodaleInstitute.org). Whenever buying items made from cotton, it’s crucial to support organic agriculture. Keep in mind that many other textiles, like hemp and bamboo, don’t need any pesticides in order to grow.

It was especially important to me that this romper was made from sustainable materials because it’s not exactly something that I’ll wear for years to come. Rompers and palm prints are incredibly trendy right now, so considering the fashion life-cycle, in a short amount of time they no longer will be. Part of living a green lifestyle means cutting down on disposable items, but I don’t think that means you should have to sacrifice staying on-trend. I’m focusing on filling my closet with key, well-made pieces that I can wear long-term, but turning to eco-labels or buying used when I feel I need a wardrobe refresh.
