Frequenting my local farmers’ market is a weekend mainstay in my schedule, and that’s not just because freshly picked produce taste way better than what I find at the supermarket. Choosing to buy my weekly produce from a farmers’ market is the more eco-friendly choice. With stalls generally from small, family-owned farms within a 100 miles from where I live, the amount of fossil fuels used for transportation is cut way down from the usual 1,300 miles food travels. Family farms also generally produce less environmental waste and pollution than industrial farms, as they don’t use giant processing and sorting machines. I also choose to support only the stalls from certified organic farms, so I know no pesticides were used to grow the crops.
The farmers’ market I usually go to (Larchmont Village) is open on Sundays from 9-1 pm in a bustling LA neighborhood, so what I wear to the market needs to be comfortable yet feel put together. My usual summer outfit consists of some variation of this one. I try to get to the market around when it opens, so a tee and a pair of denim cutoffs with pockets for stuffing change in is the blissfully easy choice. A straw hat pulls the laidback look together, and the wide brim also protects me from the sun in the outdoor market. White tennis shoes are my go-to footwear of choice for navigating the sometimes crowded stalls in, while making shorter shorts seem a little more modest. Most important of all is a reusable straw bag to store all of my delicious produce in (plus a couple of small cotton bags for things like green beans or berries).
I was immediately drawn to this tee for the “I just want to save the bees, plant trees, and protect our seas” graphic, but what makes it even better is the fact that it’s made out of recycled X-ray film and reused cotton – how cool is that? It’s from Ungalli Clothing, a female-owned brand committed to raising awareness about the negative impact mainstream clothing has on people, wildlife and the planet. The tee is really comfortable and soft. If you’re in the need of great basics that showcase your values, you can use code KASHA15 to get 15% off everything from Ungali Clothing!
